Portrait of a Woman with a Winged Bonnet, by Rogier van der Weyden, ca. 1430

‘A Burgundian Debate on Happiness’
The Débat de Félicité (Debate on Happiness) is typical of didactic texts written at the court of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, one of the most glittering courts in Europe. This elegant copy was made for Philip’s son Charles the Bold before he succeeded his father as Duke, and illustrates why Bruges book illustration was so popular. Here personifications of the Three Estates of medieval society, the Church, Nobility and Labour, each present their case before the Court of Sciences..
